NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Atlanta

(Sunday, December 21st)

Final Score: Atlanta 4, Philadelphia 1

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ronald Petrovicky scored twice to lead the Atlanta Thrashers to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Philips Arena.

Ilya Kovalchuk posted a goal and an assist for the Thrashers, who won their second straight game following a three-game skid.

After being blanked in a franchise-record three consecutive contests, Atlanta has now scored 11 goals in the past two days. On Saturday, they exploded for a 7-4 victory over Pittsburgh.

Byron Dafoe made 25 saves, including several difficult stops in the final period, to help Atlanta hold on for the victory.

John LeClair scored for the Flyers, who have just one win in their last seven games (1-2-2-2).

Philadelphia goaltender Jeff Hackett was back in net after getting the day off during a win Saturday over the Islanders, but was shaky and gave up four goals on 30 shots.

Kovalchuk did most of the work to give the Thrashers the lead for good in the second period, racing to a puck deep in the corner of the Philadelphia zone before finding a wide-open Petrovicky in front. The puck found its way through the pads of Hackett for a 2-1 Atlanta lead 10:20 into the second period.

Vyacheslav Kozlov gave the Thrashers some breathing room when his snap shot from the high slot went through a screen and into the net with 6:15 to play in the middle period. His 16th goal of the season made it 3-1.

Kovalchuk worked a perfect give-and-go to record an empty-netter that finished off the scoring.

The Thrashers received a hand-wrapped present from Hackett to score the game's first goal. Atlanta dumped the puck off the dasher behind the Philadelphia net and Hackett skated out to handle the puck, but the disc slipped off his stick and went right in front of the vacated net. Petrovicky skated in and easily record his ninth goal of the season just 1:29 into the game.

The Flyers scored just nine seconds into a power play to even the score at 1:34 of the middle period. Michal Handzus received the puck behind the net and sent a quick pass to Leclair in front. LeClair had no trouble finishing the perfect play to tie the game at 1-1.
