Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jim Vandermeer scored a pair of goals, as the Philadelphia Flyers ended a five-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders at the Wachovia Center.
Simon Gagne also scored for Philadelphia, which ended a three-game losing streak and won for the first time in six games (1-1-2-2). Robert Esche made 18 saves in the win.
Philadelphia captured its third straight win against the Isles this season and improved to 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings with New York.
Alexei Yashin notched the lone goal for the Islanders, who have lost two in a row and three of their last five. Garth Snow stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced in the loss.
After New York struck first on Yashin's goal 1:56 into the second period, the Flyers posted three unanswered goals for the win.
The Flyers eventually tied the game when Vandermeer solved Snow with 3:08 remaining in the second period. Mark Recchi slid a cross-ice pass to Vandermeer along the left boards. Vandermeer then wristed a shot just inside the right post past a screened Snow.
Vandermeer's second goal of the game at the 6:18 mark of the third period gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Jeremy Roenick skated down the left wing before making a hard cut. He then fed the puck to Vandermeer, whose one-timer from the left circle beat Snow five-hole.
Philadelphia then took a 3-1 edge on Gagne's power-play goal with 7:26 to play. Kim Johnsson fired a shot just inside the blue line and Gagne was in front to deflect the puck past Snow.
Yashin opened the scoring early in the second with a hard snap shot from the slot. It was his 11th goal of the season.
The Flyers were 0-1-0-2 in their last three at home before Saturday's win. They started the season 12-0-2 as the host...New York fell to 2-9-2-1 on the road this season...Philadelphia cashed in once on six chances with the man advantage...New York went 0-for-2 on the power play...Vandermeer has three goals this year and Gagne has eight...Roenick had two assists.
