NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Philadelphia

(Saturday, December 20th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 3, NY Islanders 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jim Vandermeer scored a pair of goals, as the Philadelphia Flyers ended a five-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders at the Wachovia Center.

Simon Gagne also scored for Philadelphia, which ended a three-game losing streak and won for the first time in six games (1-1-2-2). Robert Esche made 18 saves in the win.

Philadelphia captured its third straight win against the Isles this season and improved to 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings with New York.

Alexei Yashin notched the lone goal for the Islanders, who have lost two in a row and three of their last five. Garth Snow stopped 16 of the 19 shots he faced in the loss.

After New York struck first on Yashin's goal 1:56 into the second period, the Flyers posted three unanswered goals for the win.

The Flyers eventually tied the game when Vandermeer solved Snow with 3:08 remaining in the second period. Mark Recchi slid a cross-ice pass to Vandermeer along the left boards. Vandermeer then wristed a shot just inside the right post past a screened Snow.

Vandermeer's second goal of the game at the 6:18 mark of the third period gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Jeremy Roenick skated down the left wing before making a hard cut. He then fed the puck to Vandermeer, whose one-timer from the left circle beat Snow five-hole.

Philadelphia then took a 3-1 edge on Gagne's power-play goal with 7:26 to play. Kim Johnsson fired a shot just inside the blue line and Gagne was in front to deflect the puck past Snow.

Yashin opened the scoring early in the second with a hard snap shot from the slot. It was his 11th goal of the season.
