NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Columbus
(Friday, December 12th)
Final Score: St. Louis 3, Columbus 2 (OT)
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Doug Weight scored with just 8.7 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over Columbus at Nationwide Arena.
Jamal Mayers and Keith Tkachuk also scored for the Blues, who are unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1). Brent Johnson made 30 saves in the win, including two in overtime.
The game-winner was somewhat controversial, as the fans and Columbus coach Doug MacLean seemed to think an interference call was in order for Tkachuk, who knocked down Darryl Sydor inside the St. Louis zone.
That led to an odd-man rush, with Tkachuk leading a 3-on-1 across the blue line. He fed a pass to Pavol Demitra in the slot, and Demitra hit Weight in the left circle for the one-timer.
Columbus goalie Fred Brathwaite, who turned aside 30 shots in the loss, had no chance, and the Blue Jackets remained winless in their last four (0-2-1-1). Andrew Cassels and Rick Nash scored for Columbus, with Nash's goal tying the game in the third period.
St. Louis scored twice in the first period, grabbing a 1-0 lead when Mayers scored his second of the season 12:34 into the stanza.
Tkachuk then made it 2-0 on a power play just over four minutes later, the result of Eric Nickulas' work behind the net. The puck ended up to the left of Brathwaite, where it was corralled by Tkachuk, who lifted a shot over the netminder's shoulder for his 15th of the season.
Columbus got on the board at 13:36 of the second period when Geoff Sanderson's wrister from the slot trickled past Johnson and was picked up by Cassels, who stuffed it home from inside the crease for his fourth.
That was all the scoring until Nash's league-leading 19th goal at 9:47 of the third period, a wrister from the right circle on the power play.
St. Louis has won seven of the last nine meetings, including three of its last four at Nationwide...Brathwaite played with St. Louis from 2001-03...Columbus was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Blues scored once in two opportunities with the extra skater.
