NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Columbus

(Wednesday, December 10th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 1, Columbus 1

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Sami Kapanen scored with 1:08 left in regulation to lift the Philadelphia Flyers into a hard-fought 1-1 tie with the scrappy Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Fred Brathwaite was a monster in net for Columbus, snuffing out two power plays in overtime and stopping 40 of the 41 shots he faced. Manny Malhotra scored the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, who have won just once in their last seven games (1-4-2).

Jeff Hackett stopped 19 shots for Philadelphia, which hasn't lost in six games (3-0-3) and is 13-1-4 in its last 18.

Late in the third period, Michal Handzus battled in front with a Columbus defenseman and kept the puck alive to Kapanen at the right back boards. Kapanen got Anders Eriksson all turned around, scooted to the right post and jammed the puck through Brathwaite's five-hole for the equalizer at the 18:52 mark.

Todd Marchant had a breakaway opportunity stopped by Hackett at the 4:24 mark of overtime and Rick Nash had a short-range chance shortly thereafter, but that was all the pressure the Flyers would face in the extra session.

The Blue Jackets then were whistled for a penalty for too many men on the ice, but the Flyers couldn't capitalize.

Philly would get another chance, though, as Scott Lachance was called for boarding at the tail end of the Philadelphia power play, giving the Flyers the final 1:45 with the extra skater.

Despite several excellent chances, Philadelphia still couldn't solve Brathwaite, who made a franchise-record eight saves in the overtime alone.

The Columbus goal came at the 6:47 mark of the first period. With a Blue Jacket and a Flyer grappling for the puck along the left boards, David Vyborny carried the puck out and zipped a pass cross-ice to Malhotra, who ripped a one-timer from the bottom of right circle past Hackett.

Game Notes

The Blue Jackets, 8-5-3 on home ice, will host St. Louis on Friday...The Flyers are 3-0-4 when trailing after the first period...Columbus has never beaten Philadelphia in five meetings (2-0-3)...Malhotra has scored three goals in 17 games this year, matching last season's total.
