NHL Game Summary - Chicago at New York Islanders
(Saturday, December 6th)
Final Score: NY Islanders 5, Chicago 2
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Alexei Yashin broke out of his goal-scoring slump with two tallies, leading the New York Islanders over the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-2, at Nassau Coliseum.
Dave Scatchard, who missed 20 games with a dislocated right shoulder, returned to the lineup with a bang as he recorded a goal and an assist.
Trent Hunter and Eric Cairns also tallied for the Islanders to end a seven- game losing steak.
Rick DiPietro got the win in net with 21 saves.
Mark Bell and Tyler Arnason tallied for the Blackhawks, who have lost eight consecutive games and are winless in their last 13 (0-9-1-3).
Craig Anderson struggled between the pipes for Chicago, allowing five goals on 33 shots.
Bell started off the scoring with his fifth goal of the year just four minutes in when he took a pass from Mikhail Yakubov off his skates and whipped a turnaround shot to the top corner over DiPietro's glove hand.
Yashin, with just one goal in his last 13 games, evened things when he got his own rebound and beat Anderson from a bad angle for his seventh goal this season.
The Isles thought they made it 2-1 on a goal by Roman Hamrlik, but it was disallowed after a lengthy review. The video-goal judge ruled that an off- balance Yashin dislodged the net as he tried to avoid a check just before the puck went in.
New York did take the lead at 8:25 of the second when Scatchard scored his first goal this season, easily putting home a rebound into the open side of the goal after Anderson let a soft shot by Mariusz Czerkawski get away.
Hunter made it 3-1 a little more than nine minutes later on his ninth goal when he lunged for a loose puck in the slot to put it past a fallen Anderson.
Yashin netted his second of the contest and eighth on the year when he ripped a shot past Anderson's glove side after a pretty forehand move on a 2-on-2 rush.
Cairns notched his second of the campaign 3:32 into the final period to make it 5-1 when he wristed one from the left circle just over Anderson's left pad into the far side of the net.
Arnason ended an 11-game scoring drought with his fifth of the year, a wrist shot past DiPietro with 14:23 left in the third to make it 5-2.
The Blackhawks' current winless skid is their longest since the lockout- shortened 1994-95 season...They have also lost nine in a row on the road...New York improved its record when leading after two periods to 9-0-1 while Chicago fell to 0-13-1 when trailing after two...Eric Godard also returned to the Isles' lineup after missing three games with a shoulder injury.
