NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Philadelphia
(Friday, December 5th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 3, Phoenix 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jim Vandermeer and Tony Amonte scored second period goals, as the Philadelphia Flyers remained unbeaten at home with a 3-2 victory over Phoenix at the Wachovia Center.
John LeClair also scored for the Flyers, who have won 11 straight on home ice to improve to 12-0-2 in South Philadelphia this season. Robert Esche stopped 18 shots in the win, which gave the Flyers a 12-1-2 record in their last 15 games.
Branko Radivojevic and Andrei Nazarov lit the lamp for Phoenix, which had its four-game (3-0-1) unbeaten streak snapped. Sean Burke turned aside 28 of the 31 shots he faced.
Among the league-leaders in first-period goals, the Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the opening stanza when Radivojevic scored on a one-timer from the slot. It was just the second time all season that the Flyers fell behind on home ice.
But they didn't trail for long, as Vandermeer's first of the season knotted the score at 2:59 of the second period. The play was set up by Justin Williams, who skated around the back of the net before settling in the right circle and finding Vandermeer at the point for a one-timer.
Philadelphia later gained a 2-1 lead at 10:13 on Amonte's ninth of the season. He was fed by Jeremy Roenick in front, but it was Donald Brashear who made the goal possible. Brashear freed the puck along the right boards and tipped it to Roenick, who sent a pass from the right circle to Amonte in front.
LeClair's fifth of the season extended the Flyer lead to 3-1 on a power play 1:18 into the third period, but Nazarov scored just 16 seconds later to make it a 3-2 game.
Esche faced only five total shots in the third, as Philadelphia clamped down on defense to preserve the win.
The Flyers' home unbeaten streak is the second longest in club history, surpassed only by the 1979-80 team's 19-0-7 tear at the old Spectrum...Philadelphia has won three of the last four meetings with Phoenix.
