Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Fred Brathwaite stopped 24 shots to earn his first victory of the season in Columbus' 2-1 win over the New York Islanders at Nationwide Arena.
Brathwaite earned the win in his fifth game of the season for the Blue Jackets, who won their second straight. The goalie, filling in for Marc Denis (flu) remains undefeated in his career against the Islanders (5-0-0).
Oleg Kvasha scored late in the third period for the Islanders, who suffered their second straight loss.
Rick Nash and Todd Marchant both scored in the second period for Columbus, which is unbeaten in six games (5-0-1) against New York.
Nash opened the scoring at 9:04 of the second with his 12th goal of the season from Trevor Letowski. Nash gathered the puck at center ice and beat Rick DiPietro with a high shot.
Marchant pushed the lead to 2-0 in the final second on a faceoff. Marchant deflected a shot by Jaroslav Spacek under DiPietro, who finished with 27 saves.
Kvasha spoiled Brathwaite's 16th career shutout with 40 seconds remaining, pushing in a rebound.
Geoff Sanderson posted an assist for the Blue Jackets, who recalled goaltender Pascal Leclaire before the game to replace Denis...New York fell to 2-6-2 on the road...Sanderson has five points in his last four games overall and eight points in five games as a Blue Jacket against New York.
