NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Buffalo

(Friday, November 21st)

Final Score: Buffalo 5, Carolina 0

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - J.P. Dumont had two goals and an assist and Mika Noronen stopped 35 shots for his second shutout of the season, as the Buffalo Sabres blanked the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-0, at HSBC Arena.

Jochen Hecht and Ales Kotalik each had a goal and an assist, and Chris Drury also tallied for the Sabres, who won for the second time in three games.

Jamie Storr had little help, offensively or defensively, stopping 20-of-25 shots as the Hurricanes went winless in their fourth straight (0-3-1).

Buffalo got the first goal of the contest on a tally by Dumont with less than three minutes to play in the first period. Dumont threw the puck toward the net trying to make a pass, but it deflected off the skate of Carolina's Jesse Boulerice and past Storr.

Hecht put the Sabres up 2-0 early in the second period with his first goal of the season. It was Hecht's third game back after missing the first month of the season with a broken arm. Hecht took a shot from the blue line and was able to collect the rebound as he moved toward the net. He continued around the back of the net and beat Storr on a wraparound.

The Sabres took a three-goal advantage midway through the second when Adam Mair battled down the left boards with the puck and zipped a pass to Kotalik, who was cruising into the slot. Kotalik collected the pass and ripped a shot that beat Storr high to the glove side.

With just under four minutes to go in the second, Drury capped the three-goal stanza with his fourth tally of the season. Dumont shot it on net and Drury banged at the rebound a couple times. Carolina's Eric Staal tried to clear the puck, but accidentally poked it into his own net.

Buffalo scored its final goal at 4:10 of the third. Hecht came out from behind the net and tried a side angle shot. Dumont raced over from the faceoff circle, beat everyone to the rebound and beat Storr high.

The Hurricanes put 17 shots on net in the third, but Noronen was up for the challenge.
