NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Tampa Bay
(Thursday, November 20th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, NY Islanders 2
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 26 shots in net, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Khabibulin was backstopping a shutout for nearly 55 minutes until the Islanders scored a pair of late goals to make it interesting.
Fredrik Modin, Brad Richards and Cory Stillman found the back of the net for the Lightning, who are unbeaten in four of their last five (3-1-1) and continue to play well on home ice (7-1-1-1).
Arron Asham and Mariusz Czerkawski got the New York goals, while Rick DiPietro stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced. The Islanders have now lost four of six since a four-game unbeaten streak.
Modin got the Lightning on the board first with his fifth of the season. Tim Taylor set the goal up with a pass from behind the net, sending the puck in front for Modin, who fought off a defender and swung a backhand past DiPietro for the 1-0 lead at 13:28 of the first.
Tampa Bay then took advantage of a New York turnover for its second goal. Richards picked the puck up briefly above the right circle before dropping it to Martin St. Louis. The give and go was in effect, as St. Louis fed the puck to Richards, who snapped a shot past DiPietro from the left circle, beating the netminder at 17:21 of the first for a 2-0 lead.
Stillman made it 3-0 in the third with his 10th goal of the season, a wrister from the left circle that DiPietro should have snagged with his glove. The puck deflected off his mitt, however, and trickled across the goal line at 4:27 of the period.
In search of his second shutout of the season, Khabibulin's hopes were dashed when Asham scored on a wrap-around with 5:41 remaining in the game. Czerkawski tallied 4:17 later with a second-effort goal in front of the net. It was his team-leading 12th of the season.
These teams split four meetings last season, but the Lightning have won just three of the last nine overall...Tampa Bay was 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Islanders went scoreless on four opportunities with the man advantage.
