NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Detroit
(Monday, November 10th)
Final Score: Detroit 3, Chicago 0
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Dominik Hasek made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Joe Louis Arena.
Pavel Datsyuk, Ray Whitney and Brendan Shanahan scored second-period goals for the Red Wings, who won for just the second time in eight games (2-5-1). Brett Hull added two assists in the victory.
The Blackhawks, coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado on Sunday, have dropped two in a row after winning three straight. Chicago was shut out for the third time this season.
Hasek, who had missed five games because of a groin injury, stopped seven shots in the first period and 11 in the second, then needed to turn aside just three shots in the third to preserve his 63rd career shutout. He also blanked Dallas on 22 shots on October 24.
Michael Leighton made 28 saves in net for Chicago, which lost in regulation at Joe Louis Arena for the first time since April 2, 1999 (6-0-3-1).
The Red Wings failed to score on 12 shots in the opening period, then finally beat Leighton just 1:32 into the second on a power play.
Mathieu Schneider had the puck at center ice and sent it ahead to Datsyuk, who gained the Chicago blue line with speed and raced into the zone through the right circle. The Chicago defense was late and Datsyuk lifted a shot from the low right circle past Leighton for his fifth goal of the season.
Hull, who started the play on the opening goal, was at it again with just under two minutes remaining in the second period. He dug the puck off the boards at center ice and made a backhand pass to Kris Draper, who skated into the Chicago zone along the left wing. Draper drew the attention of Leighton and spotted a cutting Whitney, who redirected the cross-ice feed home from the right side of the crease for his third goal.
Detroit wasn't done in the period, scoring with just 12 seconds left. Shanahan fired a shot on net as he crossed the blue line and Leighton made the save. Boyd Devereaux corraled the rebound in the slot, but didn't have a lane to shoot and wheeled into the right circle before sending the puck back to the right point. Chris Chelios then fired a cross-ice pass below the left circle for Shanahan, who deposited the puck into the net from a difficult angle for his fifth goal of the season.
Hasek set the tone early while his teammates were on a power play, stacking the pads to deny Scott Nichol on a breakaway just two minutes into the contest.
During the same power play, Leighton made a glove save on a blast from the top of the slot by Jason Woolley.
