NHL Game Summary - Colorado at New Jersey
(Saturday, November 1st)
Final Score: New Jersey 4, Colorado 3
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Jeff Friesen scored an unassisted goal with just over five minutes to go in regulation, putting the Devils ahead for good in New Jersey's 4-3 triumph over the Colorado Avalanche at the Meadowlands.
Scott Niedermayer, Scott Gomez and Colin White also scored for the Devils, who snapped a three-game losing streak to Colorado and won their third straight game. Martin Brodeur stopped 20-of-23 shots in the win.
Joe Sakic, Alex Tanguay and Milan Hejduk scored for Colorado, and David Aebischer faced 31 shots, as the Avalanche lost for the second time in three games.
Less than a minute after Hejduk had tied the game at three, Friesen stole a pass just outside of the Devils offensive zone and cruised over to the top of the right face off circle. From there, he wristed a shot past Aebsicher for the go-ahead tally at 14:33 of the third.
The teams opened up the scoring late in the first period by scoring within a minute of each other on the power play. Sakic notched his second goal of the year at the 18:33 mark off of helpers from Rob Blake and John-Michael Liles.
The Devils marked 53 seconds later when Aebsicher got in trouble coming out of the net to play a puck. Brian Rafalski hammered a shot on net which hit a Colorado defenseman. The puck popped out to Niedermayer at the left face off circle, who one timed it past a flailing Aebsicher for the goal.
But with just 3.1 seconds to go in the first, Tanguay gave the Avalanche the advantage off assists by Sakic and Derek Morris. New Jersey got the only goal of the second period from Gomez at the 9:18 mark.
White opened up the third period scoring with a blast from the high slot off of a nice feed from Turner Stevenson. His goal at 9:30 of the third was his first of the season.
Hejduk tied it up at three apiece at the 13:51 mark when Tanguay hit him with a pass at the left face off circle, and he blasted it past Brodeur.
