NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Vancouver
(Tuesday, October 28th)
Final Score: Vancouver 6, Columbus 3
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Artem Chubarov tied the game late in the second period and scored the go-ahead goal early in the third, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to a 6-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at GM Place.
Markus Naslund notched two goals and two assists for the Canucks, who improved to 3-0-2 in their last five and are unbeaten in six home games this season (5-0-1). Magnus Arvedson and Matt Cooke each posted a goal and an assist in the victory.
Johan Hedberg made 16 saves for the Canucks, while Brendan Morrison picked up three assists. Todd Bertuzzi, armed with a new four-year contract, had two assists.
David Vyborny, Darryl Sydor and Rick Nash scored for Columbus, which blew a 3-2 lead and has lost five straight after winning three in a row. Fred Brathwaite stopped 22 shots in defeat.
The Canucks appeared headed to the second intermission down 3-2, but Chubarov scored with 6/10ths of a second left in the period to tie it.
Bertuzzi had the puck in the right corner and got it to Naslund, who swung around the net and made a backhand pass from the left circle toward the crease. Chubarov was skating in front and deflected it past Brathwaite.
Chubarov, a healthy scratch in the last game, then put Vancouver in front with his second goal of the contest and third of the season at 6:18 of the third. Cooke raced into the Columbus zone along the left wing and dropped pass for a trailing Chubarov, who snapped a shot from the circle past Brathwaite.
Brathwaite then kept the Blue Jackets in the contest with some stellar saves, including a diving glove stop and a left pad kick on consecutive shots by Jason King.
However, Cooke scored an insurance goal with 7:13 remaining. He took a shot from the top of the slot that Brathwaite turned aside, but the Blue Jacket defense overskated the puck and Cooke gathered in his own rebound before firing it past the netminder for his third goal of the year.
Naslund added his second of the game and fifth of the season with a backhand deflection of a Morrison pass with 2:18 to play.
The Canucks, for the ninth time in as many games this season, scored first when Arvedson netted his first goal in a Vancouver uniform just 1:12 into the contest. Brent Sopel carried the puck around the net and along the boards before sending a pass to the center point for Mattias Ohlund, who fired a shot that was deflected home by Arvedson.
Naslund scored his first of the game just over three minutes later on a power play. Bertuzzi had the puck behind the net and drew the Columbus defense toward him. He then sent a pass into the left circle for Naslund, who snapped a shot past Brathwaite.
The Blue Jackets then tied it with a pair of goals just over three minutes apart.
Vyborny made it 2-1 at the 6:22 mark, tipping home a point shot by Jaroslav Spacek for his fourth goal. Sydor tied it 3:04 later when his shot from a tough angle along the left wing deflected off the stick of Vancouver's Sami Salo and past Hedberg.
Columbus then went in front at 9:36 of the second period on Nash's sixth goal. A point shot was deflected in front and Vancouver's Ed Jovanovski failed to clear the puck. Geoff Sanderson picked it up for the Blue Jackets and spotted Nash alone and the second-year man quickly snapped a shot home from the right circle.
Sanderson almost gave the Blue Jackets a two-goal edge with a minute to play in the second, but he had the puck poked off his stick on a breakaway and batted a shot out of the air from the left side of the crease. The puck trickled along the goal line without going into the net.
Naslund has six points in his last two games after posting a total of three in his first seven contests...Morrison has a goal and six assists during a five- game point streak...Sopel left the contest with a groin injury...Columbus, which has lost each of its four road games this season, will continue its western Canada trip with games at Edmonton on Thursday and Calgary on Saturday.
