NHL Game Summary - Florida at New Jersey
(Wednesday, October 22nd)
Final Score: Florida 2, New Jersey 1
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Jay Bouwmeester and Olli Jokinen scored 42 seconds apart in the third period, as the Florida Panthers rallied to post a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils at the Meadowlands.
Roberto Luongo was brilliant in net for the Panthers, keeping them in the game early on and finishing with 32 saves. However, Florida's lackluster offense, which had scored just three goals in its three previous games, continued to stagger and trailed by a goal with just over five minutes to play.
Bouwmeester then scored to get the Panthers on the board and Jokinen gave them the lead for good only seconds later, helping Florida snap a three-game slide.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored for the Devils and Martin Brodeur stopped 21 shots for New Jersey, which remained winless in its last three games (0-2-1).
Langenbrunner scored the game's first goal when he beat Luongo on a one-timer on a 2-on-1 break. He took a pass from John Madden and re-directed it into the vacated net for a 1-0 New Jersey lead with 14:45 to play in the game.
Bouwmeester then tied the game at 1-1 when he re-directed a pass from Viktor Kozlov from the corner. Kozlov worked hard to create some space and fired a hard pass towards Bouwmeester, who deflected the puck through the pads of Brodeur with 5:23 left to play.
Only 42 seconds later the Panthers took their first lead of the game on Jokinen's second tally of the season. Rushing towards the net on a 2-on-1 advantage, he put home a rebound of a Niklas Hagman shot.
Luongo made some stellar saves during a late Devils flurry to help preserve the Florida victory.
Late in the first period New Jersey had a two-man advantage for 42 seconds. Luongo, though, kept the game scoreless with several of his 15 saves in the opening stanza.
The Devils had several quality scoring chances late in the second period. Sergei Brylin had a golden opportunity, but was unable to put the puck on net with Luongo out of the crease.
David Hale's wrist shot later in the period from the point hit off the right post and caromed harmlessly into the corner, denying the youngster of his first career goal.
Only seconds later, Patrik Elias was denied on his shot from the left circle by a great glove save by Luongo, keeping the game scoreless after two periods of play.
Florida won for just the second time in its last seven meetings with New Jersey...The Panthers also won for just the third time in 12 trips to the Meadowlands...The Devils have just one win in five games this season (1-2-2)...Defenseman Scott Niedermayer returned to the lineup after missing a game with a sore back for New Jersey.
