NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Chicago

(Sunday, October 19th)

Final Score: Chicago 3, Nashville 1

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Tuomo Ruutu's first NHL goal snapped a third- period tie and propelled the Chicago Blackhawks past the Nashville Predators, 3-1, at the United Center.

Tyler Arnason and Kyle Calder each had a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks, who halted a four-game losing streak. Chicago improved to 2-4 on the campaign and scored more than two goals for the first time this season.

Jocelyn Thibault turned aside 21 shots to earn the victory.

David Legwand tallied the lone goal for Nashville. Chris Mason made his first appearance this year in goal for the Predators and made 28 saves.

Ruutu gave Chicago a 2-1 lead when he scored on the power play just 53 seconds into the third period. The Blackhawks worked the puck to Ruutu, who skated into the right circle and fired a high wrist shot over the shoulder of Mason and under the crossbar.

Calder made it 3-1 with 6:10 remaining. Steve McCarthy centered the puck to Calder in front. His first two attempts were stopped by Mason, but he kept poking at the puck and eventually knocked it underneath the goaltender and into the net for his second goal of the campaign.

The Predators nearly cut the deficit to 3-2 in the closing minutes, but Marek Zidlicky's shot from the slot with Thibault out of position caromed off the inside of the post.

After a scoreless first period, Nashville opened the scoring with Legwand's power-play goal at 16:54 of the middle frame. Zidlicky's shot was stopped by Thibault, but the rebound went in front to Legwand and he was able to tap the puck into the open net for his second tally of the year.

The Blackhawks evened the contest just 23 seconds later courtesy of Arnason's third goal of the season. Arnason beat Mason through the legs after he was able to gather a bouncing puck in the slot.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes even though Chicago outshot Nashville 24-8, including 16-4 in the second period.
