NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Edmonton

Final Score: Edmonton 6, Colorado 3

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Steve Staios scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Edmonton to a 6-3 win over Colorado at Skyreach Centre.

Ryan Smyth tallied a goal and two assists, while Cory Cross and Marty Reasoner each had a goal and an assist in the win. Mike York also lit the lamp for the Oilers, who are unbeaten at home this year (3-0).

Tommy Salo made 31 saves in the win.

Rob Blake had a goal and an assist, while Paul Kariya and Alex Tanguay also scored for the Avalanche, who have lost three straight times in Edmonton.

Philippe Sauve made 19 saves for Colorado in his NHL debut.

The Oilers took a 3-2 lead on Cross' power-play score. Staios wristed a shot from the right circle that Cross redirected in front and the puck whizzed by Sauve with 3:22 left in the second.

Edmonton widened the margin to 4-2 on Staios' second goal of the game. The defenseman wristed a shot from the left circle that beat Sauve high over his left shoulder just 1:03 into the final period.

The Avalanche closed within 4-3 on Tanguay's power-play tally with 12:55 left in the game. Blake fired a slapper from the point off a faceoff that Salo saved. However, the rebound came loose and Forsberg shifted the puck to Tanguay who banged it home for the score.

Edmonton widened its cushion courtesy of Reasoner's shorthanded score midway through the third. Smyth and Reasoner skated in on a 2-on-1 advantage and Smyth fed a cross-ice pass to Reasoner, who tapped the puck in the goal.

Smyth added an empty-netter for the final margin.

Colorado grabbed a 1-0 lead on Kariya's power-play goal with 11:13 left in the opening period, but the Oilers tied the contest on York's shorthanded score with 6:33 remaining in the first.

Edmonton seized a 2-1 edge on Staios' power-play tally just 26 seconds into the second period. Staios one-timed a slap shot from the right circle.

Colorado tied things up at 2-2 on Blake's power-play goal in the second period. Forsberg won an offensive-zone faceoff from the left circle and slid the puck back to Blake, who one-timed a shot from the point past Salo on the near side with 14:51 left in the frame.

Game Notes

Staios had his first career multi-goal game...Edmonton was 2-for-8 on the power play, while Colorado converted on three of its nine chances with the extra skater..Forsberg had two assists.
