NHL Game Summary - Florida at Carolina

(Monday, October 13th)

Final Score: Florida 2, Carolina 2

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Jesse Boulerice scored in the second period to lift Carolina to a 2-2 tie with Florida at RBC Center.

Josef Vasicek also scored for the Hurricanes, who have yet to record a win in their first three games this season (0-2-1).

Marcus Nilson had a goal and an assist, while Kristian Huselius also scored for the Panthers, who are 1-0-2 in their first three contests of 2003.

Roberto Luongo turned aside 33 shots for Florida, while Kevin Weekes made saves 18 for Carolina.

In the overtime, the Hurricanes registered all five shots.

Sean Hill had a golden opportunity to give Carolina a win as he wristed a shot from the left circle, but Luongo made a great glove save to keep the game deadlocked at 2-2.

Carolina grabbed a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game as it capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage. Glen Wesley took a wrist shot from the left circle that caromed off of Vasicek, who was in front of the goal, and the puck found its way just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

The Panthers answered with 1:18 left in the first period as they had a 5-on-3 power play as well. Nilson slipped a pass to an onrushing Huselius and the left winger wristed a shot from the high slot that beat Weekes to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Huselius' second of the year.

Florida seized a 2-1 lead on Nilson's power-play tally with 7:10 left in the middle stanza. Jay Bouwmeester took a wrist shot from the left point that Nilson deflected into the net.

Carolina tied the game moments later on Boulerice's first goal of the year. Bret Hedican dished a pass to a cutting Boulerice and the winger skated in on goal and faked out Luongo before sliding a backhand over the goal line with 4:58 left in the second frame.

The Hurricanes dominated play in the third period as they outshot Florida 9-2, but neither team was able to score. Florida had the best chance as it was awarded a power play with 4:23 left in the third, but could not break the tie.
