(Saturday, October 11th)
Final Score: Columbus 5, NY Rangers 0
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Darryl Sydor and David Vyborny each posted a goal and an assist, as the Columbus Blue Jackets routed the New York Rangers in a 5-0 whitewash at Nationwide Arena.
Marc Denis recorded his 10th career shutout, his seventh with the Blue Jackets, by stopping 25 shots. The Blue Jackets have now beaten the Rangers in three straight games at home.
Trevor Letowski, Lasse Pirjeta and Rick Nash also scored, and Andrew Cassels and Espen Knutsen each posted two assists for Columbus, which triumphed after dropping its season opener in Atlanta.
Jussi Markkanen blocked 31 of 36 shots he faced between the pipes for the Rangers, who have opened the season by yielding five goals in losses in each of their first two games.
Columbus jumped out to an early 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Letowski and Vyborny.
Letowski deflected Westcott's slap shot from the right point past Markkanen's left shoulder for his first goal with the Blue Jackets at the 3:04 mark.
Vyborny's score put Columbus in the driver's seat less than six minutes in. A Knutsen shot was deflected to Rotislav Klesla, who put a shot on net. Markkanen blocked the shot, but Vyborny banged home the rebound.
In the second period, Knutsen fired a centering pass from the left face-off circle into the slot, where Pirjeta flung a wrist shot off a Ranger skate and past Markkanen for the tally 10:17 into the stanza.
The other second-period goal for the Blue Jackets came just under three minutes later. Vyborny dove to keep the puck in the offensive zone, flipping it to Cassels. Cassels then dove to center it to Nash, who swatted at the bouncing puck on the backhand, getting it behind Markkanen. Nash paid the price, though, as he was leveled from behind as he shot.
Columbus' final tally came off the stick of Sydor just over three minutes into the third period. Cassels centered the puck to Sydor, who ripped a shot on net. Markkanen stopped the initial offering, but Sydor beat the netminder glove-side on the rebound.
