NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Buffalo
(Saturday, January 18th)
Final Score: Columbus 4, Buffalo 3 (SO)
Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Johansen tallied the lone goal in the shootout as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, at First Niagara Center.
After each shooter failed to light the lamp, Johansen skated in on goal and opened up Ryan Miller with several backhand-to-forehand moves and wristed a shot up top to win the game.
"We didn't play our best game, but we played a solid game," Johansen said. "They're a pretty good team over there and they played us hard. You've got to give them credit too. But our guys stuck with it and found a way."
Brandon Dubinsky had a power-play goal and an assist, while David Savard and Matt Calvert contributed the other two goals. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves and stopped all three shooters in the shootout in Columbus' sixth straight win.
Tyler Myers led the Sabres with two goals, including the power-play tally that tied the game with 25 seconds left in regulation in his 300th NHL game. Drew Stafford notched Buffalo's other goal and Tyler Ennis supplied two assists.
"We're doing a better job of playing the same way throughout a 60-minute game," Myers said. "We still have lapses, but you can tell there's a huge difference to where we were even a month ago, and even two weeks ago."
Miller made 32 saves in Buffalo's third consecutive loss.
Buffalo pulled the goalie and Savard tripped Stafford with 37 seconds remaining. Cody Hodgson sent a cross-ice pass to Myers at the right circle, who wristed home a shot short side to tie the game with 25 seconds left.
Myers wristed home his fifth of the season to open the scoring 59 seconds into the game.
Savard slapped the puck off the bounce under Miller's blocker to even the game at one 6:19 into the first. The Sabres quickly regained the lead 28 seconds later when Ennis took a Columbus turnover in the slot and dished a pass in tight to Stafford, who tapped the puck into an open net.
After Miller turned aside Nikita Nikitin's shot, Calvert was present in front to backhand the rebound into the net to tie the game with close to seven remaining in the first.
Miller made multiple saves before a scrum ensued in the crease. Dubinsky found the loose puck, lifted it over cluster of Sabres defenders in the crease and into the net to give Columbus a 3-2 lead with 8:39 left in the second.
Ennis and Erhoff both extended their point streaks to four games ... Bobrovsky is now 3-0 in shootouts this season ... Buffalo hosts Florida on Tuesday ... The Blue Jackets return home to face the Kings.
