NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Vancouver
(Monday, March 26th)
Final Score: Vancouver 1, Los Angeles 0
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Roberto Luongo posted 38 saves to record his fourth shutout of the season and 59th of his career as the Vancouver Canucks slipped past the Los Angeles Kings by the slimmest of margins, 1-0, on Monday at Rogers Arena.
Manny Malhotra scored the only goal of the game with assists from Max Lapierre and Alexander Edler for the Canucks, who have won three straight games.
"We like to be a good defensive team too," said Vancouver forward Alex Burrows. "(Luongo) was on his game tonight and made some big saves for us."
Unfortunately, it wasn't all good news for Vancouver, as head coach Alain Vigneault confirmed that star forward Daniel Sedin has a concussion after taking an elbow to the head from Blackhawks' defenseman Duncan Keith last week.
Vancouver tightened its hold on second place in the Western Conference with 101 points, and is two back of the St. Louis Blues for the top spot in the West with six games remaining on the regular-season schedule.
Jonathan Quick was the hard-luck loser, as he stopped 24-of-25 shots for the Kings, who are one point behind the idle Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Canucks netted the only goal of the game 3:05 into the opening period when Lapierre gained the offensive blue line on the rush and sent a left-wing feed to Malhotra. Malhotra drifted to the left circle and fired a quick snap shot over the glove of Quick.
Luongo was stellar all night, stopping nine shots in the first period, 12 in the second and 17 in the final period to keep the Kings off the scoreboard.
Los Angeles also failed to score on three power-play chances.
"It was a hard game for us," said Kings coach Darryl Sutter. "We were coming off of two really physical games. You could see there wasn't a lot of energy in our game. We were doing everything right, we were just trying to dig down in there."
The Kings fell to 22-13-8 under head coach Darryl Sutter...Los Angeles has gone 1-for-19 on the power play over its last seven games...Vancouver will host the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, while the Kings will look to snap their two-game skid at Calgary, also on Wednesday.
