NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Vancouver
(Friday, December 23rd)
Final Score: Calgary 3, Vancouver 1
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Leland Irving stopped 29 shots for his first career win as the Calgary Flames took a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena.
Curtis Glencross had a goal and an assist while Mikael Backlund scored the winner and Olli Jokinen added an empty-netter for the Flames, who have won three straight.
Dan Hamhuis scored the lone goal while Roberto Luongo stopped 28-of-30 shots for the Canucks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
"We obviously weren't good enough tonight to win," Luongo said. "They came in here and played a great road game to come away with two points."
The game was scoreless through the first two periods, but the Flames took a 1-0 lead 2:36 into the third as Jarome Iginla caught up to a dump along the deep left boards and passed it to the front where a flying Glencross ripped it home.
Calgary made it a 2-0 game with 5:52 to play as Backlund's quick shot off a broken play made it into the net.
That goal proved fortunate as Hamhuis scored on a snap shot from the high slot through a screen with 3:01 to play.
Vancouver later pulled Luongo for the extra attacker and Irving robbed Daniel Sedin to keep the lead.
Jokinen put the puck into the empty net to seal the win.
Vancouver hosts Edmonton on Monday...Calgary plays at Columbus on Tuesday...Vancouver had won the previous two games against the Flames this season.
