NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at San Jose

(Thursday, March 1st)

Final Score: Buffalo 1, San Jose 0

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller made 39 saves for his second straight shutout as Buffalo took down San Jose, 1-0, at HP Pavilion on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Miller stopped 43 shots in a 2-0 win over Anaheim. Thursday saw him stop four fewer, but it was still good enough for his fifth shutout of the season.

Drew Stafford scored the only goal of the game for the Sabres, who have won five of six.

"It's an important time of year for us and I'm just happy I can backup the guys," said Miller. "They're the ones who are doing most of the work. We need these wins to get back in the hunt."

Antti Niemi made 18 saves in the loss for the Sharks, who have dropped three of four.

"We poured it on but Miller is a world-class goalie," said San Jose center Joe Thornton. "Whatever he sees he's going to stop and we just didn't get enough traffic in front of him."

The only goal came late in the first period after Tyler Ennis intercepted an errant pass at his own blueline and skated the other way. After gaining the San Jose line, he skated to his right and left a drop pass for Stafford, who keyed up a slap shot from the right circle that snuck past Niemi with 1:09 to play in the frame.

From there, the goaltenders took over.

Miller, though, was by far the busier of the two as he stopped 11 shots in each of the first two periods and turned aside 17 in the third for his 27th career shutout.

After allowing the one goal in the first period, Niemi made four stops in the second and five in the third to keep his team in the game.
