NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Montreal
(Saturday, November 19th)
Final Score: Montreal 4, NY Rangers 0
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Carey Price stopped 17 shots and Brian Gionta scored twice, as Montreal brought the New York Rangers' winning streak to an end with a 4-0 defeat at Bell Centre.
The Rangers were aiming for their first eight-game streak since the 1974-75 season, but were utterly dominated and suffered their fifth straight loss in Montreal.
The Canadiens also got goals from Erik Cole and Tomas Plekanec in the victory, their fourth in the last six games. Price recorded his second shutout of the season and the 14th of his career.
"Our awareness in our defensive zone is right on," Price said. "I think what we're doing is that we're keeping the gaps close and not giving them any room."
Martin Biron allowed four goals on 31 shots in the setback, including one just 3:45 into the game during a Montreal power play.
"Now we have to go back and do our homework and get back on our winning ways," Biron said. "Instead of over-complicating things and over-thinking things, we have to keep it simple."
Yannick Weber started with the puck from behind his own net and fired a pass from behind his blue line into the neutral zone for Cole, who was along the right boards and close to Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto.
But Del Zotto was moving laterally and couldn't reach Cole before he skated into the offensive zone and fired a shot past Biron from the middle of the circle.
The Habs went up 2-0 early in the second period thanks to a crafty Scott Gomez and opportunistic Gionta. While being checked from behind, Gomez backhanded a pass into the Rangers' zone along the right boards. Gionta raced to the loose puck and wristed a shot from the outside edge of the circle, beating Biron at 8:12.
Plekanec's power-play tally seven minutes into the third put Montreal ahead by three, and the Rangers never caught up. They had only 10 shots through two periods and couldn't beat Price in the third.
Gionta tallied his second goal -- a one-timer from the slot, again off a pass by Gomez -- with 6:13 to play.
The Rangers' last win in Montreal came on March 17, 2009, a 4-3 shootout victory...New York continues its four-game road trip Wednesday in Florida against the Panthers, then ends it Friday against the Capitals.
