NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Toronto

(Saturday, November 12th)

Final Score: Ottawa 5, Toronto 2

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Nick Foligno scored two goals, leading the Ottawa Senators to a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs from Air Canada Centre.

Zack Smith had a goal and an assist while Sergei Gonchar and Chris Phillips lit the lamp for the Senators, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

Craig Anderson made 31 saves in net.

Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak scored, while Ben Scrivens made 19 saves in defeat for the Leafs, who have lost three of their last five contests.

"I made some mistakes, but I'm going to learn from them and get better," said Scrivens following his fourth career start.

Toronto took the lead with just 2:42 remaining in the first stanza when Bozak accepted a pass from Phil Kessel, moved to the top of the left circle and fired a quick wrist shot that caught Anderson off guard, as the puck snuck past the netminder on the short side.

Ottawa tied the game, 1-1, at 9:11 of the second period when Phillips fired a shot from the left point that hit numerous bodies and sticks in front before deflecting to an unchecked Gonchar, who wristed it into an empty net from the right circle.

The Senators took a 2-1 lead at 17:46 of the second period with a 5-on-3 power play goal. With Bozak already in the box for holding, Philippe Dupuis got his stick up on Foligno, cutting him for a four minute double minor.

Foligno made the Leafs pay for their reckless play when he got a saucer pass from Erik Karlsson, before firing the puck through the legs of Scrivens for his fifth goal of the year.

"I had to get some repairs, but I was able to hop back out there and make a play," Foligno said.

The Sens made it 3-1 just 48 seconds into the third period when Smith picked up a loose puck in the defensive zone and raced all the way up the ice on the left wing and in on a 2-on-1 with Karlsson. Smith elected to shoot and snapped one low to the stick side past Scrivens.

Toronto cut it to 3-2 at 17:10 of the third stanza when Lupul found a loose puck behind the net amid a scramble and backhanded it past Anderson.

The Leafs pulled Scrivens with 1:22 to go in the game, but Foligno tapped one into the empty net at 18:53 to make it 4-2.

To make it worse for Toronto, Clarke MacArthur sent a pass back to the point intended for Carl Gunnerson but the puck eluded him and slid all the way into the net to account for the final score.

Phillips was credited with the final goal of the game.
