NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Los Angeles

(Thursday, January 5th)

Final Score: Los Angeles 1, Phoenix 0 (OT)

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Quick notched his sixth shutout of the season and Drew Doughty scored 38 seconds into overtime to send the Kings past the Coyotes, 1-0, on Thursday.

Quick stopped all 22 shots for the Kings, who improved to 5-0-3 under new coach Darryl Sutter.

"The shutout is great, but the two points is huge," said Quick.

Mike Smith was denied the victory despite stopping 27-of-28 shots for the Coyotes, losers in six of their last seven.

The game's lone goal did not come easily. Doughty slid the puck towards the crease mid-dive. The Coyotes' Oliver Ekman-Larsson inadvertently deflected the puck into the net as it was being dislodged amidst a scrum. Doughty was awarded a goal, and officials upheld the ruling following a review.

"I finally contributed to a win," said Doughty, who scored his first goal since November 10. "It's been a while. It was good to get the monkey off my back."

Quick has been stellar of late. His six shutouts lead the NHL and he has allowed more than two goals just once in his last eight starts.

Smith, meanwhile, returned for Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Blues after missing two weeks with a groin injury. He stopped 12 Kings shots in the second and eight in the third.

"Smith was unbelievable," said Coyotes forward Shane Doan. "We just have to find a way to score."

Game Notes

Quick recorded his 20th career shutout...This was the fourth of six meetings between the teams this season. The Kings are 3-0-1 thus far...Both teams were 0-for-1 with the man-advantage...Sutter replaced John Stevens, who was acting as interim coach after the firing of Terry Murray on December 12.
