NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Anaheim

(Sunday, October 23rd)

Final Score: Phoenix 5, Anaheim 4

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Martin Hanzal scored two first-period goals, and the Phoenix Coyotes held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, at Honda Center.

Keith Yandle and Lauri Korpikoski each had a goal and set up another for the Coyotes, who avoided their third loss in a row.

"We've had some bad games lately. We made sure we were ready tonight," Hanzal said.

Ryan Getzlaf tallied twice for Anaheim, which nearly overcame a three-goal deficit but wound up suffering their third straight home loss to its Pacific Division rival.

The Ducks made it interesting late as Getzlaf made it 5-4 with 1:08 remaining in the third period. With the Ducks' net empty, the Anaheim captain beat Phoenix goalie Mike Smith from between the circles with a sizzling wrist shot.

Both teams scored twice during an eventful first 20 minutes.

After Hanzal opened the scoring at 4:41, Lubomir Visnovsky and Getzlaf scored to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead. Corey Perry emerged from behind the net and found Visnovsky for a one-timer, then Getzlaf redirected Teemu Selanne's shot at 14:02.

Hanzal, though, unleashed a slap shot past Jonas Hiller to tie it up just 42 seconds later.

The Coyotes scored three times in a 3:09 span during the second period to put the Ducks in a 5-2 hole.

Boyd Gordon staked a claim in front of Hiller and tapped home Taylor Pyatt's feed from behind the net at 4:47. A bad giveaway in their own zone by the Ducks led to a goal for Korpikoski and Hiller was replaced by Dan Ellis after Yandle lit the lamp at 7:56.

"That flurry of goals in the second period sunk our hockey club," said Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle. "We had our fair share of scoring chances, but we didn't execute and it cost us."

Kurtis Foster, in his Ducks debut, ripped a shot from the point to make it 5-3 with 6:29 remaining in the middle stanza. Foster scored four seconds after Hanzal finished serving a minor penalty for hooking.
