(Tuesday, October 18th)
Final Score: Los Angeles 5, St. Louis 0
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist to back Jonathan Quick's first shutout of the season, as the Los Angeles Kings dominated the St. Louis Blues, 5-0, in their home opener.
Jarret Stoll, Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar each had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who have won two in a row since a two-game skid.
"It's what we wanted. The first game at home in front of your fans," Gagne said. "We want to show what type of team we are and it's good to get the first win and get a lot of goals for the fans. It's always fun to go to a hockey game and see some goals. Overall we did play a good game as a team."
Quick, who had six shutouts last season, made 27 saves for Los Angeles, which snapped a seven-game losing streak to St. Louis.
Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak turned aside 14-of-18 shots before being pulled in the third period. Halak came into the game with a 5-0-0 career mark against the Kings.
Brian Elliott stopped 5-of-6 shots for St. Louis, which went 1-3-0 on a four- game road trip.
"We got outplayed today in most categories," Blues forward Matt D'Agostini said. "We couldn't match their intensity."
Gagne got the Kings going at the 7:20 mark of the first period. Gagne's shot from the top of the left circle hit off Stoll's skate in front. Gagne followed up his shot and fired a wrister past Halak for a 1-0 lead.
Stoll lit the lamp at the 11:36 mark of the second stanza. Brown gathered the puck behind the net and slid a pass in front. Stoll, who was wide open, beat Halak with a wrister.
A power-play goal from Brown with 4:55 left in the middle frame made it 3-0. Mike Richards, positioned at the bottom of the left circle, found Brown in front of the net. Brown's first attempt was stuffed by Halak, but his rebound went through the legs of the netminder.
