NHL Game Summary - Winnipeg at Chicago

(Thursday, October 13th)

Final Score: Chicago 4, Winnipeg 3

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Marian Hossa gave Chicago its first lead 33 seconds into the second period and the Blackhawks were able to hang on to defeat the Winnipeg Jets, 4-3.

"It was a different test from the other night where the game's on the line throughout," Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said. "We got to make sure that we're more confortable in that setting and we should improve off of these levels."

Andrew Brunette, Patrick Kane and Dave Bolland netted the other goals for the Blackhawks, who won their second straight after dropping their season opener against Dallas.

Ray Emery stopped 27-of-30 shots for Chicago.

Jim Slater scored twice, while Kyle Wellwood added a goal for Winnipeg, which has lost its first two games to start the year.

Ondrej Pavelec saved 28-of-32 shots for the Jets.

Johnny Oduya wristed a shot from the left point which was deflected by Slater past Emery to make it 1-0, 4:24 into the first period.

The Jets made it 2-0 three minutes later when Slater deflected another shot past Emery, this time off a Ron Hainsey slap shot from the right point.

"Right off the bat, two deflections. We weren't in the lane, (we) got off to a slow start, no shots on net," Quenneville said.

The Blackhawks got on the board with a power-play goal midway through the opening period when Brunette lifted a shot past Pavelec's left shoulder after Jonathan Toews and Kane poked at the loose disc in front of the net.

Hossa made a cross-ice pass to Kane, who one-timed it past Pavelec from the right circle to tie the game with just over three minutes left in the first.

Hossa then gave the Blackhawks their first lead of the game just 33 seconds into the second period. He one-timed a slap shot from the right point off a Nick Leddy pass from just inside the blue line.

Bryan Bickell set up Bolland 6:45 into the period with a backhand pass, and Bolland one-timed it home.

Wellwood made it a one-goal game late in the second, when he backhanded his shot past a diving Emery after a scrum in front of the net.

Emery stopped 11 Jet shots in the third period to secure the win.
