NHL Game Summary - Boston at New Jersey

(Wednesday, January 4th)

Final Score: Boston 6, New Jersey 1

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Patrice Bergeron scored twice and Milan Lucic dished out three assists, as Boston leveled New Jersey, 6-1, at Prudential Center.

Gregory Campbell, Nathan Horton, Shawn Thornton and David Krejci also tallied for the Bruins, who crept within a point (52-51) of the top-seeded Rangers with their eighth win in nine games.

Tim Thomas earned the victory with 30 saves.

"It was a tighter game than the score indicates," Thomas admitted. "If Bergeron doesn't get that fourth goal, it might have ended up differently. They had some sneaky chances on me, but it was nice that we scored a few more times to make it look easier."

David Clarkson provided the sole offense, and Martin Brodeur was left in for all six goals on 27 shots as the Devils have lost two in a row and three of five.

"We just got our butts kicked out there. There's no other way to sugarcoat it," said Brodeur in muted tones. We didn't have any answer for them whatsoever."

Bergeron broke free up the middle and beat a sprawling Brodeur with a shot inside the right post at 4:02 of the second period and Boston moved ahead by a 3-1 count.

He struck again just after the two-minute mark of the third with a one-timer off a Brad Marchand dish from the high slot for a 4-1 Bruins edge.

It was 5-1 for the visitors at 4:50, when Krejci batted a rising Dennis Seidenberg wrister out of the air and past Brodeur at the left post.

Thornton provided the final margin with 5:37 remaining.

New Jersey struck on the power play to open the scoring, as Clarkson's wrister off a Zach Parise feed sailed by Thomas at 4:24 of the first period.

But Thornton's rip from the below left circle got through traffic and redirected off Campbell's skate at 8:15. Boston went up 2-1 with 6:43 left in the period as Horton tapped in a Krejci feed at the left post for a power-play score.

Game Notes

Boston has won both meetings this year and five of six since the start of last season...Bergeron notched his initial multi-goal effort of the campaign and first in the regular season since a two-goal game on February 3 against Dallas...The six goals tied a season high given up by Brodeur, who was also punctured for six scores in a 6-1 defeat at Colorado on November 30...Lucic also notched three helpers in a 5-3 win at Columbus on December 10.
