NHL Game Summary - Boston at Carolina
(Wednesday, October 12th)
Final Score: Carolina 3, Boston 2
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Anthony Stewart and Jiri Tlusty both scored third-period goals, as the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Boston Bruins, 3-2, to earn their first win of the season.
Joni Pitkanen added a goal for the Hurricanes, who got 26 saves from Cam Ward.
"It was the fourth game of the year, but we did treat it as a must win," said Ward.
Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand both scored a goal for the Bruins, who saw Tim Thomas stop 31 shots.
Neither team lit the lamp in the first period, but Pitkanen got the Hurricanes on the board in the opening moments of the second. Taking advantage of a power play, he settled the puck at the point and drifted in for a wide- open wrist shot to beat Thomas.
Early in the third period, Stewart controlled the puck behind the net. His centering pass boomeranged off a defender and he put the carom in for a 2-0 Carolina lead.
Segiun beat Ward with a blistering wrist shot less than a minute later to make it a 2-1 game.
Later, Tlusty dumped the puck into the Bruins zone and settled in front of the net, where Brandon Sutter found him for the decisive goal.
"Our line had pretty good chances and we were saying that something has to go in," said Tlusty. "All of our players did a really good job."
Marchand's one-timer off of a deft cross-ice pass from Patrice Bergeron made it a 3-2 game, but the Bruins would get not closer.
"We have a better team than that. It's a little disappointing, but at the same time it's no reason to panic," Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara said of the team's 1-3 start.
This was the first of four meeting between the teams this season...Boston is 1-for-18 on power play chances this season.
