NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Columbus

(Thursday, March 17th)

Final Score: Detroit 2, Columbus 0

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Joey MacDonald had 37 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Detroit Red Wings took a 2-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Drew Miller and Valtteri Filppula each had a goal for the Red Wings, who have won four straight.

Detroit has 94 points on the season and sits in first place in the Central Division, 10 points ahead of Chicago, and second place in the Western Conference, nine points back of Vancouver.

Steve Mason made 25 stops for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped nine of their past 10 games to fall out of the playoff chase.

"They scored in the first minute and you never wanna play catch-up that early," said Mason. "We played a decent game out there tonight, but decent doesn't cut it when you're fighting for points."

Detroit got all the offense it needed just 33 seconds in when Darren Helm fired a shot on net from the right wing that was stopped, but Miller was in front to tap in the rebound.

Skating on the power play 10 minutes later, the Red Wings made it a 2-0 game on Filppula's one-timer at the left side off a Johan Franzen setup.

MacDonald turned aside 14 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 13 in the third to complete the whitewash.
