NHL Game Summary - Nashville at San Jose
(Tuesday, March 8th)
Final Score: San Jose 3, Nashville 2 (OT)
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau scored with 96 seconds left in overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators.
In the extra session, Marleau grabbed the puck in his own zone, skated the other way down the right wing and from the circle went upstairs with a wrister to beat Pekka Rinne over the glove for the win.
"We were able to pick it up and it was sort of a 2-on-1," said Marleau about the goal. "I was able to get in, get some body position, used the quick shot and it went in."
Ryane Clowe had a goal and an assist while Justin Braun also scored for the Sharks, who bounced back from Saturday's loss to Dallas that snapped an eight- game winning streak. Antti Niemi stopped 23 shots in the win.
Shea Weber had a goal and an assist and Joel Ward scored the other goal for the Predators, who went 1-1-2 on their four-game road trip. Rinne made 30 stops in the loss.
"They're one of the top teams and I thought we played really well defensively," said Rinne. "We limited their chances out there and stayed in the game the whole time."
The Sharks drew first blood in the game on Clowe's 19th goal of the season. From the right boards, Jason Demers threw the puck to the front where Dany Heatley deflected it, and it then went off of Clowe and past Rinne at the 8:17 mark of the first.
However, Nashville scored six minutes later on the power play when Ward jammed the puck home during a scrum in front.
San Jose again went on top 4:17 into the second on the power play when a slap shot from Braun at the right point hit off the stick of a diving Predator and went in.
Another power-play goal from Nashville tied the game two minutes later as a backdoor pass from David Legwand over to the left side saw a sneaking Weber shoot it home.
Rinne made 13 stops in the third period while Niemi had to stop just four to force overtime.
San Jose hosts Vancouver on Thursday...Nashville faces Minnesota at home on Thursday...Each team won twice in the season series...Nashville was 2-for-4 on the power play while Nashville was 1-for-2.
