NHL Game Summary - Detroit at San Jose
(Thursday, March 3rd)
Final Score: San Jose 3, Detroit 1
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley scored twice to keep red-hot San Jose streaking with a 3-1 win over Detroit at HP Pavilion.
Patrick Marleau added an insurance goal in the third period for the Sharks, who have won eight straight and haven't lost on home ice since January 13. Antti Niemi surrendered the one goal on 27 shots.
Tomas Holmstrom tallied for the Red Wings, who are one of the league's best road teams, but have lost two straight as the visitors. Joey MacDonald gave up all three goals on 28 shots.
"They seem to get up for us," Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart said of the Sharks.
The Sharks came out hard and fast, and got on the board nearly four minutes in when Heatley banged a rebound past MacDonald.
The Red Wings, though, drew even toward the end of the first while on a power play. Mike Modano ripped a shot from just above the left circle, and Holmstrom's deflection squeezed through Niemi's legs for his 14th goal of the season.
Heatley scored again nearing the four-minute mark of the second period on the power play. This time, Joe Thornton sent a pass to the top of the crease, where Heatley tapped it into the open net.
During the third period the Sharks kept the pressure on, forcing MacDonald to make several spectacular saves. However, MacDonald finally cracked under the pressure when he tried to clear a lazy dump pass. With Marleau barreling down on him, the netminder whiffed on the puck and Marleau got enough on it to send it skipping into the net for a 3-1 lead with 4:12 left to play.
The Sharks held on from there, as Niemi only had to make five saves in the final frame to seal the win.
"We're satisfied right now," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said of the win. "[Detroit] is a measuring tool, so it's gratifying getting the points."
The Red Wings are still 22-9-3 as the guest this year...Both teams were 1- for-3 on the power play...San Jose will host Dallas on Saturday...Detroit will continue its western road trip, playing at Phoenix on Saturday.
