NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Carolina
(Saturday, November 20th)
Final Score: Nashville 2, Carolina 1 (SO)
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Martin Erat and Cal O'Reilly scored shootout goals to lift Nashville to a 2-1 win over Carolina.
Erat closed the shootout session with a nice move in front, flipping the puck over Carolina goalie Cam Ward's stick and into the net for the victory.
Jerred Smithson scored the only goal in regulation for Nashville, which has won four of its last five on the heels of a five-game losing streak. Pekka Rinne was victorious with 21 saves.
Joni Pitkanen had a goal for the Hurricanes, who also lost a shootout in Pittsburgh on Friday. They have dropped four of their last five games. Ward played well in defeat, stopping 26-of-27 shots.
"You're never satisfied with losing in a shootout, but it is an important point for the hockey team," said Ward.
Pitkanen opened the regulation scoring for Carolina at 9:22 of the first period when he tipped in Jeff Skinner's shot while charging toward the Nashville goal.
The Predators tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period when Smithson found himself alone in front of the Hurricanes net and easily wristed a shot past Ward at the 3:53 mark.
The goaltenders were peppered with shots in the third period, but neither was beaten. Rinne turned aside all nine shots he faced, while Ward stopped eight.
Four of Ward's stops came in the overtime period. Two slapshots by Predators defenseman Cody Franson didn't get through.
Nashville has won four straight over Carolina since its last loss to the club on January 13, 2006...Ward was back after sitting out Friday's shootout loss to the Penguins.
