NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Phoenix

(Saturday, October 23rd)

Final Score: Carolina 4, Phoenix 3 (OT)

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Anton Babchuk scored the game-winner with 2:08 remaining in overtime, as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3.

Patrick Dwyer, Jussi Jokinen, and Sergei Samsonov also lit the lamp for the Hurricanes, who went 2-3-0 on a five-game road trip. Cam Ward turned aside 36- of-39 shots.

"I think we were good for about 35-40 minutes," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. "They're a young team like we are and we faltered there, but we came back to find a way to win so good for us."

Kyle Turris had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes, who were seeking back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Scottie Upshall had a goal and an assist.

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 37-of-41 shots in defeat.

"I give the guys full marks for finding a way to get a point," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "But the reality is is if we play like that we're not gonna get anywhere."

Just 2:52 into overtime, Joni Pitkanen controlled the puck at the right circle. He slid a cross-ice pass to Babchuk, who chipped the disc into the net for the victory.

Dwyer's short-handed breakaway goal at the 4:17 mark of the second period put Carolina on the board.

The Hurricanes made it a two-goal game when Jokinen found the back of the net on the power play at the 9:45 mark. Pitkanen's shot from the left circle left a rebound in front for Jokinen, who chipped the puck into the net.

Samsonov scored 1:21 into the third period to make it a 3-0 contest.

Phoenix came storming back to deadlock the game. Turris lit the lamp at the 5:45 mark to cut the gap to 3-1. Turris then jammed home a rebound at the 17:58 mark to make it 3-2.

A mistake by Ward led to Upshall's game-tying goal with 1:40 remaining in regulation. Ward went to play the puck behind his own net, but Turris skated in and stole the disc away from the goaltender. Turris slid a pass in front for Upshall, who put the puck into an empty net for a 3-3 game.

Game Notes

Phoenix won the only meeting between these two teams last season...Coyotes forward Ray Whitney played against his former team. Whitney spent each of his last five seasons with the Hurricanes, helping the franchise win a Stanley Cup in 2006. He had 119 goals and 334 points with Carolina, but joined Phoenix as a free agent this past offseason.
