NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Washington

(Sunday, November 7th)

Final Score: Washington 3, Philadelphia 2 (OT)

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Mike Green scored a power-play goal 29 seconds into overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Verizon Center.

Alexander Semin and Eric Fehr also tallied for the Capitals, who have won four games in a row. Washington goaltender Braden Holtby made 23 saves in his first NHL start.

Nikolay Zherdev and Ville Leino lit the lamp for Philadelphia, which had a six-game winning streak snapped. Sergei Bobrovsky, who was bidding to become the first rookie netminder since Pelle Lindbergh in 1982-83 to win seven consecutive starts, stopped 36 shots in defeat.

"The heart was there to go out and compete and battle the way you need to in order to be successful," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "But at the end of the night, if we're on our game, we're doubling up in scoring chances and doubling up in shots on net. That didn't happen tonight."

With 3:55 remaining in the third period, Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger clipped Washington forward David Steckel and was assessed a double-minor for high-sticking. It became a two-man advantage when Philadelphia rearguard Sean O'Donnell was called for boarding with 19 seconds left.

The Flyers managed to send the contest into overtime, where Green beat a screened Bobrovsky with a slap shot from the right point.

"I think no matter what the outcome was, it was important that we stuck together here," Green said. "I think in the past couple of games we've let some games be closer than they should. Fortunate to get the outcome that we wanted, but more important that we played a full 60 minutes."

Zherdev opened the scoring 9:51 into the contest by finishing off a 2-on-1 break with a slick wrister, but Fehr evened things up with a wrister from the left circle that managed to squeeze between the left post and Bobrovsky's arm with 2:31 remaining in the first period.

Leino made it 2-1 when he got his stick on Andrej Meszaros' point shot at 4:04 of the second period. Semin's power-play goal off a broken play in front tied the game at 8:54 of the middle stanza.
