(Thursday, January 28th)
Final Score: Carolina 4, NY Islanders 1
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Matt Cullen and Eric Staal each recorded a goal and an assist for Carolina in a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders at the RBC Center.
Cam Ward made 26 saves to pick up the win for the Hurricanes, who have won three straight for the second time this year. Stephane Yelle and Jussi Jokinen each tallied in the victory.
"Our structure is as good as it's been all year in terms of how the lines fit," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said.
Rick DiPietro was beaten three times on 22 shots against, while Matt Moulson scored the lone goal in New York's third straight loss.
The Islanders' Josh Bailey went off for tripping eight minutes into the game, and Staal banged in his own rebound at the 9:19 mark for a 1-0 lead.
Cullen's 10th goal of the season came less than three minutes later after an Islanders turnover in their own zone, and a scoreless second frame featured just five shots from Carolina and three from New York.
Yelle made it 3-0 with 10:20 left in the regulation when he scored from the left circle despite Carolina being a man down.
Moulson spoiled Ward's shutout bid when he roofed one into the back of the net from the left circle off a nice feed from Frans Nielsen.
"[Nielsen] battled for it and made a great play between two guys. I just put it on net and it found its way in," recalled Moulson.
Jokinen eased in an empty-netter with 45 seconds left to clinch the win.
Staal has eight goals in five games since taking over as captain for Rod Brind'Amour. He has 18 for the season...Carolina improved to 12-12-3 at home...Carolina's only other three-game winning streak this season came from January 8-12...Staal now has 400 career points.
