NHL Game Summary - Washington at NY Islanders
(Tuesday, January 26th)
Final Score: Washington 7, NY Islanders 2
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Alexander Semin scored twice as the Washington Capitals took a 7-2 win over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.
John Erksine, Brendan Morrison and Jason Chimera each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who are on a seven-game tear. Jose Theodore stopped 18-of-20 shots over the first two periods while Michal Neuvirth played the third period and stopped all 11 shots he faced.
"That's the good thing about our team is that we have a lot of guys who can score goals," said Erksine. "Each night we get different guys contributing and that helps up win."
Rob Schremp and Kyle Okposo each had a goal for the Islanders, who have dropped three of four. Dwayne Roloson started the game, but was pulled after the first period as he gave up four goals on 12 shots. Rick DiPietro played the final two periods and gave up three goals on 21 shots.
"We hit the post four times in the first period and that is never going to help you," said New York coach Scott Gordon. "When you don't capitalize on opportunities, especially when you're playing Washington, it's going to come back to haunt you."
A scary moment occurred late in the first period when New York defenseman Jack Hillen was struck in the face by a shot from Alexander Ovechkin.
Hillen dropped to the ice and was tended to by staff for several minutes. Blood pooled on the ice around him and a stretcher was brought onto the ice, but Hillen walked off with assistance.
He was taken to a local hospital and is being further evaluated.
Washington took the lead just 1:05 into the contest as a slap shot from Erksine at the left circle was redirected in by Morrison, and the team made it a 2-0 game at the 4:49 mark of the first, when Semin's wrister from the left circle went over Roloson's glove.
The Isles got a goal back on the power play, as Schremp skated from the left point to the left circle and snapped a wrister that beat Theodore 6:03 into the first.
Washington, though, made it a 4-1 game after 20 minutes. Mike Knuble pushed the puck in on his second attempt for a power-play goal with 1:47 left and Semin's second goal of the period in the final moments gave his team a three- goal lead.
Erskine's quick wrister from the left side just 2:36 into the second made it a 5-1 game, while Okposo's one-timer in the low slot got past Theodore halfway through the period to get the Islanders back within three.
Chimera got the goal back 4 1/2 minutes later on a snap shot for his 11th goal of the season.
Brooks Laich's goal with 5:08 to play in the third capped the scoring.
