NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Philadelphia
(Saturday, January 23rd)
Final Score: Philadelphia 4, Carolina 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers took a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Wachovia Center.
Chris Pronger had a goal and an assist while Daniel Carcillo had a goal for the Flyers, who have won the first three games of a six-game homestand. Ray Emery stopped 33 shots in the win.
"We didn't have a lot of jump tonight and weren't playing our 'A' game," said Philadelphia head coach Peter Laviolette. "But we found a way to win it and get the two points and that's all that counts."
Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour each had a goal for the Hurricanes, who have dropped four of their last five.
"We were a bit slow at the start of the game," said Brind'Amour. "Second period we were a lot stronger and the third period was back and forth. Emery made a big save on me at the end and that was the difference."
Manny Legace started the game in net, but left early in the first period with a recurrence of pink eye. He gave up one goal on seven shots while Cam Ward played the rest of the game in net and allowed two goals on 22 shots.
Carolina made it a one-goal game just 1:21 into the third on a lucky break as Emery misplayed the puck behind his net where Sergei Samsonov grabbed it and threw a blind pass out front where Brind'Amour fired it home for his fifth goal of the season.
Mike Richards was awarded a penalty shot with 8:03 to play as he was interfered with on a breakaway, but he blew his chance to give the Flyers a two-goal lead as he shot it a rolling puck over the net.
The Hurricanes were given a power play with 2:12 to play when Braydon Coburn was called for slashing and Ward was pulled from the net moments later for a 6-on-4 advantage, but Emery preserved the lead with a pair of stops down low on Brind'Amour and Carter got the puck into the open net with just 0.6 seconds left to seal the win.
Philly drew first blood as Carcillo stole the puck off a Carolina player near the blueline, skated in all alone and went backhand to forehand before lifting the puck over Legace just 3:05 in.
Carolina, though, tied the game on the power play with 59.7 seconds left in the first as Jussi Jokinen sent a saucer pass from the left circle to the front where a wide open Staal slammed it home.
The Hurricanes came out on fire in the second period and had several scoring chances through the first several minutes, but Emery was able to make the stops and keep the game tied.
The Flyers then took the lead back just three seconds into a power play as Carter won a right circle faceoff draw back to Pronger, who wristed the puck off the right post and past Ward with 5:49 to play in the second.
Philly then made it a 3-1 game just 1:45 later as a Carolina player skated past the puck at his own right circle and Aaron Asham passed it from there to the slot where Carter fired a wrister home for his 20th goal of the season.
Philadelphia continues its six-game homestand on Sunday against Pittsburgh...Carolina hosts Boston on Sunday...The Flyers took all four games against Carolina this season and have won 11 of the last 13, overall...Richards is 0-for-5 on penalty shots in his career.
