NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Philadelphia
(Sunday, March 28th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 5, New Jersey 1
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ville Leino and Simon Gagne each had a goal and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers got back on track with a 5-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.
Lukas Krajicek, Matt Carle and Kimmo Timonen each had a goal for the Flyers, who snapped a five-game slide. Brian Boucher stopped 32 shots in the win.
Philadelphia jumped into the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with 82 points and 38 wins, one win better than Montreal, which also has 82 points. Both teams have six games left in the regular season.
"You have to step on your opponents when you're up 2-0 or 3-0. That's what we did," Boucher said.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored the lone goal while Martin Brodeur was charged with four goals on 19 shots over two periods for the Devils, who have lost four of their last six. Yann Danis played the third period in net and stopped five shots.
"You can't fault Marty for the screened shots," Devils coach Jacques Lemaire said. "We have to do a better job in front of him."
The loss, coupled with the Penguins' win over Toronto earlier Sunday, puts New Jersey two points back of Pittsburgh for first place in the Atlantic Division. Also, because of New Jersey's loss, Washington clinched the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Flyers got on the board just 53 seconds in as Carle's wrister from the slot found its way past Brodeur. Leino gave the team a 2-0 lead at the 8:18 mark on his sixth goal of the season.
Skating on the power play early in the second period, Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead, as Timonen's slap shot from the left point found the back of the net 45 seconds in.
The Flyers then grabbed a 4-0 lead with 40 seconds to play in the middle stanza, when Krajicek blasted a shot from the left point. The puck hit off of Travis Zajac and snuck past Brodeur.
Kovalchuk's one-timer from the high slot made it a 4-1 game with 9:40 to play in the game, but the Flyers got the goal back 32 seconds later on Gagne's quick shot from the low right circle.
