NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Anaheim
(Wednesday, November 25th)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Carolina 2
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne tallied the game-winning goal and an assist, and the Ducks held on to top the Hurricanes, 3-2, at Honda Center.
Corey Perry extended his league-leading point streak to 16 games after an assist on a goal from Scott Niedermayer. Petteri Nokelainen also scored for the Ducks, who improved to 3-1-0 on a seven-game road trip.
Jean-Sebastian Giguere earned his second consecutive win after making 28 saves.
"We played pretty well tonight. They were a desperate team and played a good game. We kept with it. There were stretches where it didn't necessarily go our way, but we didn't panic. We ended up scoring some big goals," said Giguere.
Brandon Sutter and Tom Kostopoulos each scored for Carolina, which remains the only NHL team without a road win (0-9-3). The Hurricanes also set a franchise record for most road games without a win to start a season (12), topping the 1981-82 Hartford Whalers.
Manny Legace continued to start in place of an injured Cam Ward and was beaten three times on 33 shots in defeat.
"We sat back a little bit towards the end of the game and they came at us pretty hard. We gave up one late to make it a two-goal difference. We scored again, but it was too late," said Sutter.
With the game tied late in the third, the Ducks moved ahead, 2-1, after a goal by Nokelainen. Kyle Calder was under duress in the slot and sent a backhand pass to Nokelainen, who backhanded the puck perfectly into the top left corner of the net for the go-ahead tally.
Selanne gave the Ducks a two-goal lead with 1:32 left on a one-timer off a nifty pass from Saku Koivu, and the extra tally proved to be important.
Just seconds later, the Hurricanes got back to within one after the puck took an odd bounce. The disc bounced off the boards behind the net and off Giguere's skate; it slowly rolled along the goal-line, and Sutter corralled it and threw it into the net with 52.3 seconds left.
With Legace off for the extra attacker in the final moments, Carolina was unable to net the tying goal.
The Hurricanes got on the board just 1:23 into the game. Matt Cullen took a rebound and skated off toward the left circle, where Giguere shifted. Cullen quickly directed the puck behind him to Kostopoulos, who flicked the puck into the empty half of the net for the lead.
Legace was able to stop all 12 shots he faced in the first to keep the Ducks off the board, but Anaheim netted a power play goal late in the second period.
Selanne sat by the right edge of the goal, waiting for a clear passing lane to open up. After a few seconds, he sent the disc across the crease to Niedermayer, who, despite misfiring, was able to lift the puck enough over Legace to tie the game with 49 seconds to go until the third.
The Hurricanes activated Eric Staal from injured reserve prior to the game. He had one assist and six shots in 16:50 of ice time...Carolina has lost two straight after earning at least a point in five straight games.
