NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Calgary

(Thursday, January 21st)

Final Score: Chicago 3, Calgary 1

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Ben Eager didn't see the puck go in initially, but Tomas Kopecky fired the disc off his leg and into the net for the eventual game-winning tally early in the third period, and the Chicago Blackhawks continued their recent domination of the Calgary Flames with a 3-1 win at Pengrowth Saddledome.

Patrick Kane scored in the second period, while Duncan Keith added an empty- net tally for the Blackhawks, who have beaten the Flames seven straight times in the regular season, including three times this season.

"Everybody played hard and played well. We had the puck a lot and had some high quality chances," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville. "We played the way we wanted to play and found a way to win a tight game."

Antti Niemi needed to make only 19 saves to record the victory, Chicago's 16th in its last 21 games.

Jamie Lundmark scored the only goal for Calgary, which has lost six straight overall for the first time since a seven-game stretch from November 7-21, 2002. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed two goals on 27 shots for the Flames, who have scored just nine goals during the stretch.

"When you're a team that is having a tough time getting contributions offensively from everyone, you've got to be rock solid in other areas," said Flames head coach Brent Sutter. "Our goaltender played outstanding tonight, and you knew going in to the game that he was going to be counted on, playing a great team like we were playing tonight."

The game entered the third period with the score even, 1-1, but the Blackhawks went ahead for good after a lucky bounce.

Calgary started up the ice on a rush but quickly turned it over in the neutral zone, as Chicago's Colin Fraser grabbed it, marched into the Flames' zone and sent it to Kopecky, who fired the puck toward the net. Eager was acting as a screen in front of Kiprusoff, and the disc bounced off his leg and in with 14:08 to play.

Niemi was solid in net in the third period, turning away all seven shots he faced from Calgary. Keith then sealed the outcome with an empty net tally with 37.4 seconds remaining.

Chicago had a chance to take the lead early in the first, as Kane had a penalty shot after a Mark Girodano hooking call on a breakaway.

However, he couldn't capitalize, although his tally 9:14 into the second put the Blackhawks in front. Cory Sarich attempted to clear the puck out of Calgary's zone but failed, and Jonathan Toews grabbed the loose puck and sent it to the goal mouth where Kane was waiting to stuff it in.

Calgary then drew even, as Dion Phaneuf fired a shot from the point that was initially stopped by Niemi; the puck squirted behind the netminder, and Lundmark was there to clean up the rebound and put it into the net at 18:31.
