(Thursday, January 14th)
Final Score: Buffalo 2, Atlanta 1 (OT)
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Derek Roy's goal at the 2:27 mark of overtime gave the Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.
In the extra session, Tim Connolly fired a pass from the high slot to the top of the right circle where Roy's one-timer beat Ondrej Pavelec for the win.
"I wanted to put it high glove side and it turned out just right," said Roy. "It wasn't the way we wanted to play, but at the end of the day, to get two points out of this building is tough."
Patrick Kaleta scored the other goal while Ryan Miller stopped 32 shots for the Sabres, who have won seven of their last eight.
Ilya Kovalchuk had the lone goal and Pavelec made 30 stops for the Thrashers, who have dropped eight of 10.
"Out of the two teams that could afford the point the most, it wasn't us," said Atlanta coach John Anderson. "We need every point we can get right now. We're not getting our share of breaks right now, but I know if we keep playing as hard and as good as we are, good things will happen."
After a scoreless first period, Buffalo took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second as Toni Lydman threw a shot on net from the left circle that went wide, but it hit off the backboards and went to the right side where Kaleta wristed it home.
Atlanta, though, tied the game with 3:18 left in the second stanza with a power-play goal as Kovalchuk's wrister from the left circle beat Miller with traffic in front.
The third period went without a goal as Pavelec stopped 13 shots while Miller turned aside six to force overtime.
Buffalo continues its seven-game road trip in New York against the Islanders on Saturday...Atlanta plays in Carolina on Saturday...Buffalo has taken two of three against Atlanta this season...Kovalchuk has 27 goals on the season.
