NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Anaheim
(Sunday, March 21st)
Final Score: Anaheim 5, Colorado 2
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Teemu Selanne's 600th career NHL goal highlighted the Anaheim Ducks' 5-2 win over Colorado at Honda Center.
Selanne attained the milestone 34 seconds into the second period, taking a feed from defenseman Scott Niedermayer and scoring into an open net during a power play with Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson out of position following a scramble in front of the crease. The tally gave Anaheim a 3-0 lead and turned out to be the game-winner.
He became just the 18th player and the third European in NHL history to score 600 goals, joining fellow Finn Jari Kurri (601) and Czech Jaromir Jagr (646).
"My linemates have been feeding me. I think they wanted (the milestone) more than I did," Selanne said. "Most importantly, we won the game. This was just a bonus."
Ryan Getzlaf, Jason Blake, Matt Beleskey and Troy Bodie also lit the lamp for Anaheim, which got a 26-save performance from Jonas Hiller.
The Ducks have won four straight to finish 4-2-1 on a seven-game homestand. Anaheim now trails Detroit by seven points for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference.
Darcy Tucker and Ruslan Salei each had a goal for the Avalanche, who have lost their last two games and remain seventh in the West.
"We've got to be better at the start," said Colorado captain Adam Foote. "At this time of year, teams are coming out of the gates playing hard."
Anderson was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots in 32-plus minutes. Peter Budaj made 13 saves the rest of the way.
Blake spun out of the corner and slid a backhander past Anderson's left pad for a power-play goal 4:43 into the contest. Beleskey made it 2-0 seven minutes later, taking a drop pass from Getzlaf and beating Anderson.
Selanne's historic marker caused a temporary delay as his teammates streamed off the bench to congratulate the surefire Hall of Famer and join the celebration, which included a standing ovation from the Honda Center crowd.
Bodie potted a short-handed goal to chase Anderson with 7:15 remaining in the middle frame.
Tucker and Salei scored three minutes apart early in the third period, but Getzlaf's power-play tally at 7:50 helped cement the win.
Corey Perry collected three assists for Anaheim, which finished 3-for-6 on the power play...Bobby Ryan, the Ducks' leading goal-scorer, missed the game with flu-like symptoms...Colorado left winger Cody McLeod returned to the lineup after missing the last two games with a leg injury suffered while blocking a shot.
