NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Carolina

(Friday, January 8th)

Final Score: Carolina 2, Colorado 1

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Cam Ward turned aside 29 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Colorado Avalanche, 2-1, at RBC Center.

Ray Whitney scored both goals while Matt Cullen had the primary assist on both goals for the Hurricanes, who had dropped five of seven coming into the game.

"I was real happy with the game, we ran out of gas there toward the end, but we had some really big performances tonight," said Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. "Cam Ward did what we needed him to do with the lineup that we had in. The kids worked hard and skated hard."

Brandon Yip scored the lone goal while Peter Budaj stopped 18 shots in the loss for the Avalanche, who have dropped three of their last four.

"It is frustrating not getting anything going on those power plays, you know we had five power plays in the first period and we come out empty handed and it hurt," said Colorado head coach Joe Sacco. "We kept coming after them, we just couldn't pull it behind them today, only one."

Carolina got the first goal of the game courtesy of the power play at the 5:30 mark of the first. Cullen grabbed the loose puck at the left point, skated to the left circle and centered the puck. Whitney took control of the disc, went to the backhand to deke the defender then went to the backhand again and lifted the puck over Budaj.

Ward was busy in the first period as he had to stop 14 shots to keep the Avs off the board.

Just 37 seconds into the second period the Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead as Whitney wound up for a slap shot from the right circle then slipped a quick wrister between the pads of Budaj for his 13th goal of the season.

Ward needed to stop just five shots in the second period to keep the shutout going.

Colorado pulled Budaj from the net late in the game and made it a 2-1 game as the puck bounced off the back boards and Yip slammed it home from the left side.

However, it happened with just 15.5 seconds left and Colorado was unable to net the equalizer.
