NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Ottawa
(Wednesday, December 30th)
Final Score: Colorado 4, Ottawa 3
Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Ryan O'Reilly scored the eventual game-winner early in the third period, as the Colorado Avalanche held off the Ottawa Senators, 4-3, at Scotiabank Place.
Matt Duchene, Kyle Quincey and Chris Durno also tallied for the Northwest Division-leading Avalanche, who have won six of their last eight games. Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots to earn his 19th win of the season.
"(Anderson) made some huge saves when the game was on the line," said Colorado forward Milan Hejduk. "(Ottawa) had some great chances at the end (of the game)."
Ryan Shannon scored twice for the Senators, who had a two-game winning streak snapped and lost for the third time in their last five outings. Nick Foligno, back in the lineup after missing seven games with a knee injury that required surgery, was credited with a goal for Ottawa.
Pascal Leclaire made 16 saves in defeat.
O'Reilly pumped in the rebound of a Brandon Yip shot at 4:26 of the third for a 4-1 Avalanche lead.
Ottawa responded a little more than three minutes later when Matt Carkner's blast from the point deflected in off Foligno, who was stationed at the front of the net. Alex Kovalev then fed the puck from behind the enemy cage to Shannon and he ripped a shot to the top right corner of the net, trimming the deficit to 4-3 with 5:51 remaining.
The Senators pulled Leclaire in the late stages of the game, but couldn't produce an equalizer.
"We fought back pretty hard, but the puck didn't go our way tonight," Leclaire said.
Shannon found the back of the net at the 8:32 mark of the first period for a 1-0 Ottawa lead, but Quincey knotted the score with 4:33 remaining and Durno put Colorado on top with 1:06 to play in the opening frame.
The Avalanche led 3-1 at 1:19 of the middle stanza when Hejduk dished to Duchene, who snapped a low shot through the pads of Leclaire.
