NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Carolina

(Sunday, November 1st)

Final Score: San Jose 5, Carolina 1

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist to run his point streak to eight straight games and Evgeni Nabokov was solid with 25 saves, as San Jose took a 5-1 win to hand Carolina its franchise record-tying ninth consecutive loss.

The Sharks also received scores from Kent Huskins, Brad Staubitz, Douglas Murray and Marc-Edouard Vlasic to notch their fifth straight win and seventh in the last eight games.

Brandon Sutter logged the lone tally for the Hurricanes, who last tasted victory over three weeks ago when they pounded Florida at home on October 9.

Carolina tied the franchise mark of nine consecutive losses set from February 19-March 8, 1983 when the club was located in Hartford. That season, the Whalers finished with a 19-54-7 record. The Hurricanes' 2-8-3 start is also the worst for the club since relocating prior to the 1997-98 campaign.

"That's the thing, its not just one consistent thing through each game. It's a different thing each day," lamented Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice. "Either not putting it in or keeping it out. We have scored two goals on 65 shots and giving up eleven on less so, I probably can't explain how frustrating that is."

Cam Ward was tested with 25 shots and allowed all five scores.

Sutter snapped his second of the year past Nabokov into the top right corner 2:48 into the second, giving Carolina the early lead.

Huskins, though, got the equalizer for San Jose only 1:17 later, sweeping around the back of the net and banking it in off the left arm of Ward from a wide angle. Just 1:22 later it was 2-1 Sharks on a goal from Staubitz in the slot.

Then, with just over five minutes left in the second, San Jose took a two-goal lead on Murray's first of the season. The Sharks cycled the puck down along the left boards and Joe Thornton slid the disc in front for a chip-in past Ward.

The Sharks made it a 4-1 affair 4:20 into the third as Marleau set up Vlasic in front for a tip-in goal. Marleau deposited it himself a short time later, blasting a tipped pass from the right circle over Ward's catching glove for a four-goal margin.
