NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Minnesota

(Saturday, October 24th)

Final Score: Minnesota 3, Carolina 2 (OT)

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Cal Clutterbuck scored the game-winning goal 1:55 into overtime to lift the Minnesota Wild over the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2, at Xcel Energy Center.

Mikko Koivu gathered the puck at the right circle before firing a wrister on net. Cam Ward made the save but left a rebound in front for Greg Zanon, whose shot went off the left post. A sprawling Ward was left out of place, as Clutterbuck was taken to his knees while backhanding the disc into the net.

"I'm just glad I was able to have some kind of impact on the game. I wanted to come back and impact the game," said Clutterbuck, who missed the previous five games with a high ankle sprain.

Andrew Brunette and Kyle Brodziak also lit the lamp for the Wild, who had lost six of seven coming in. Niklas Backstrom stopped 21-of-23 shots for Minnesota, which improved to 3-0-0 at home this year.

Joni Pitkanen had a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes, who have lost their first six road games of the season (0-4-2). Sergei Samsonov scored his first goal of the season, while Ward turned aside 26-of-29 shots in defeat.

"We got four-and-a-half, maybe five, breakaways in that game," Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice said. "You get one a game you're pretty excited."

The Hurricanes used a Samsonov power-play goal at the 10:32 mark of the first period to take an early edge. Pitkanen controlled the disc at the right point before sending a pass in front to Ray Whitney, who quickly slid a pass to Samsonov. The puck deflected off Samsonov's stick and found the back of the net.

Minnesota tied the contest on Brunette's power-play score with 7:08 to play.

Brodziak's goal just 1:51 into the second put Minnesota ahead, 2-1. An Owen Nolan cross-ice pass from the left boards found a charging Brodziak, who made a nifty move at net before lifting a backhander past Ward.

Pitkanen deadlocked the tilt with a goal at the 7:35 mark of the second.

Each goaltender stopped 10 shots in the third period to send the game into overtime.
