NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Pittsburgh

(Monday, December 21st)

Final Score: New Jersey 4, Pittsburgh 0

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Martin Brodeur notched shutout No. 104 of his career to become the all-time leader in that category with a 35-save effort as part of a 4-0 New Jersey win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Mellon Arena.

Brodeur surpassed Terry Sawchuk for No. 1 on the list for shutouts. He had tied Sawchuk's mark in a 3-0 win against Buffalo on December 7.

The four-time Vezina Trophy winner is now the holder of all the big goaltender marks with most wins (580), games played (1,032) and minutes played (60,962).

Patrik Elias had a goal and an assist while Zach Parise had three assists for the Devils, who have won five straight and nine of their last 10.

Marc-Andre Fleury gave up four goals on 16 shots before being relived in the second period for the Penguins, who had a five-game winning streak stopped. Brent Johnson finished the game in net by stopping all 14 shots he faced.

The Devils got all the goals they needed just 4:39 in as Bryce Salvador's wrister through a screen went past the glove of Fleury for his second goal of the season.

Brodeur turned aside 10 shots in the first.

Just 23 seconds into the second on the power play, New Jersey took a 2-0 lead as Niclas Bergfors used a defenseman as a screen and slapped a shot from the top of the right circle that found the back of the net.

Elias notched his eighth goal of the season at the 8:27 mark while Mark Fraser made it a 4-0 game with 8:57 left in the second for a 4-0 lead.

Brodeur, who made 11 stops in the second frame, faced 14 in the third, but a shot that didn't count helped him keep the shutout going as Sidney Crosby rang the puck off the right post with 1:40 to play.

Brodeur then secured the shutout by making a glove save on an Evgeni Malkin shot with 42 seconds to play on his way to making history.
