NHL Game Summary - Carolina at NY Islanders

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Frans Nielsen scored the decisive goal in a shootout and John Tavares added a big marker during the extra segment as the New York Islanders earned their first win of the season with a 4-3 decision over the Carolina Hurricanes at Nassau Coliseum.
Andy Sutton added a goal and an assist in regulation for the Islanders.
Jeff Tambellini and Nielsen scored in the first two rounds of the shootout, before Carolina countered with a Jussi Jokinen tally. Tavares then ended it when he skated in and beat Cam Ward to the blocker side to secure New York's victory.
"I think even when they got back in the game we still played hard," Tavares said. "We played hard in overtime and came up with some big goals in the shootout."
Matt Moulson and Tim Jackman each lit the lamp for the Islanders, who had lost their first six games to start the season, including three straight after regulation to open the campaign. New York snapped a 10-game slide with its last win coming on April 4, 2009 versus Tampa Bay.
Dwayne Roloson stopped 35-of-38 shots for the Islanders.
Matt Cullen, Eric Staal and Jokinen scored for Carolina, which has dropped four in a row. Ward finished with 26 saves.
Trailing 3-1, Staal drew the Hurricanes within a one at 14:01 of the third when he scored into a relatively open net with Roloson out of position. Jokinen's snap shot off a feed from Joni Pitkanen 1:02 later knotted the game.
Moulson opened the scoring 8:11 into the contest when he took a pass from Sutton from behind the net and got a wrist shot past Ward from the slot.
Cullen then tallied on the power play 5:34 into the second when he banked a shot off an Islander standing in front from the back of the goal to get Carolina even.
Jackman's backhander from in close hit off a Hurricanes player in the crease and bounced by Ward with 9:28 left in the second. Less than a minute later Sutton tipped home a Jack Hillen point shot for an Isles 3-1 lead.
Nielsen made his season debut after missing the first six games while recovering from knee surgery...Hurricanes left wing Ray Whitney played in his 1,000th career game and his 300th with the Hurricanes...Despite the loss, the Hurricanes have taken eight of the last 11 from the Isles.
