NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto
(Monday, December 21st)
Final Score: Buffalo 3, Toronto 2 (OT)
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Derek Roy scored the game-winner with 1:25 left in overtime and added an assist in regulation, as the Buffalo Sabres edged the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, in a Northeast Division matchup at Air Canada Centre.
Each team had a pair of chances in the extra period, but were turned away before Roy ended things. Buffalo won a left circle faceoff and after some good puck possession, it came to Jochen Hecht in the right wing corner. The centerman dished it to Roy, who was left all alone in front and calmly went to the backhand, flipping it over Jonas Gustavsson for the game-winner.
Hecht and Nathan Paetsch tallied for Buffalo, which has won nine straight against the Maple Leafs and eight in a row at Air Canada Centre. The Sabres are now 6-1-1 in their last eight. Ryan Miller stopped 34-of-36 shots.
Ian White and Viktor Stalberg scored for the Maple Leafs, who were coming off a 2-0 win over Boston on Saturday. Toronto has dropped three of its last four. Gustavsson finished with 27 saves.
Toronto was ahead 2-1 entering the third period and maintained the slim lead until Hecht put in a backhander with 7:01 to play. Neither team would be able to register a goal during the rest of regulation time and the game went to overtime.
Buffalo opened the scoring 6:11 into the first period when Paetsch took a weak wrist shot from the left circle that squeezed through Gustavsson's pads.
Stalberg then tipped home a Tomas Kaberle shot from in close to tie things at one 3:41 into the second. The Maple Leafs kept up the pressure and were rewarded with 2:40 left in the stanza. Lee Stempniak spotted White just off the near post for an easy tap in and Toronto took a 2-1 advantage into the intermission.
Toronto hasn't won in this series since beating the Sabres in Buffalo on December 12 of last season...Buffalo went 0-for-1 on the power play, while Toronto did not have a man advantage in the contest.
